DIY: Turn a Photo into Pop Art
If you're like me, you have a ton of photos that you love, but you have no idea what to do with them all. For my first post, I'm going to take a photo and turn it into modern-pop art! I absolutely LOVE this photo of my daughter, but the background was not exactly frame worthy. So, here are some easy steps to create an awesome piece of artwork!
Supplies:
- You will need a canvas. I'm using an 8x10in standard canvas. You can use any size, it doesn't even need to be a canvas. You could also use a piece of tile, a wood block, coasters, etc.. the possibilities are endless for this project.
- Paint. You can choose any color you like. I am using an all purpose acrylic craft paint.
- You will also need a pair of scissors, a paintbrush (you could use a sponge, or roller, whatever is handy).
- Mod Podge. This will work as our glue and sealer.
- First you're going to need to choose your image and print it straight from your computer. I used regular old printer paper. Change your printer settings to black and white/grayscale. I used an old Instagram photo so I had to scale it down to 75% in order to get it to the perfect size. Again, you can customize this any way you want, if you want yours to be large, go for it, smaller, that's cool... more than one photo.. whatever works!
- Then You're going to need to cut the photo out. Trim along the edges of your subject to remove the background. Set that aside and get ready to paint.
- Apply a thin, even layer of paint to your canvas, make sure you get the edges.
- Once your canvas is COMPLETELY dry, apply a THIN layer of Mod Podge to the backside of your photo and place it right at the edge of your canvas in the bottom right corner. Smooth out any air bubbles gently with your fingers.
- Finally, cover your ENTIRE canvas and OVER the top of the photo with another thin, even layer of Mod Podge. Allow that to dry and you're all finished!
See how easy that was?!
Now you can brag to all of your friends that you it's Handmade, Together!
